Reasons Why Women are More Vulnerable to Climate Change Impacts

Do you know why women are more vulnerable to Climate Change Impacts than Men?

Here are six reasons:

  1. Women generally are the ones left to fend for their families and do household chores due to a high number of absentee fathers, as men migrate to so called greener pastures.
  2. In most countries in the global south, existing cultural norms and patriarchal societies exert the burden of carework to women.
  3. Impacts of climate change such as droughts and water shortages often mean that women are more exposed to famine and hunger while taking care of their families.
  4. Impacts of climate change expose women and girls to many forms of abuse and exploitation (rape, child marriages, & women trafficking)
  5. Climate Change impacts such as droughts and heatwaves exacerbate existing conflicts, such as land conflicts, tribal wars, and water wars, and this leaves women more vulnerable.
  6. Shortages of water, and famines affects household livelihoods and income, leaving most girls and young women not able to afford taking care of their menstrual hygiene.
