Young Climate Activists in Zimbabwe on Friday launched a ‘Climate Dollar’ in their call for inclusive climate-financing. This happened at a dedicated event that took place on the 15th of October 2021 at Cresta Churchill Hotel, in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. The Climate activists are a part of a Global Climate Campaign supported by ActionAid, Global Platforms, and Youth Community of Interest (YCOI).
According to one of the group leaders, Eric Morgen Moyo, the Launch of the Climate Dollar is a campaign for inclusive climate financing that takes into consideration the countries in the global south which are the most affected by climate change socially and economically. “Though the biggest emitters and contributors to climate change are developed countries in Europe, China, and USA, countries which suffer the most economically are those in the global south and particularly Africa & the Middle East. This is because these are the low-income countries which are also less resourced and without adequate capacity to withstand climate change impacts. It is therefore a responsibility of the biggest emitters to climate finance low-income Global South Countries so that they not only adapt but have a fair opportunity to develop amidst this climate crisis,” said Moyo.
As one of their Key Asks, the Climate activists demanded the establishment of a Youth Climate Fund that will be used as a source of advocating at international to local level for climate financing that will trickle down to benefiting young people, who are the most socioeconomically impacted by climate change. This climate financing can be used in green jobs development, green-technologies, climate mitigation and adaptation, as well as in climate disaster preparedness.
Asked on whether the Climate Dollar was intended to become a currency that can be used for transactions, the group highlighted that at the moment the objective is to advocate for ambitious & inclusive climate financing, and as such the Climate Dollar is a tool for carrying out the message.
