Government Declares Current El-Nino-induced Drought, a State of National Disaster – Zimbabwe

“Dear Zimbabweans; the foregoing situation of the climate change-induced drought requires measures and interventions as provided for in our laws. To that end, I do hereby declare a nationwide state of disaster due to the El-Nino induced drought.” Emmerson D. Mnangagwa, Zimbabwe’s President.

The government of Zimbabwe, has through the head of state, declared the current El-Nino-induced drought, a state of National Disaster, this Wednesday, the 3rd of April, 2024. In his National address from the State House in Harare, the President, Emmerson Mnangagwa cited that according to the Zimbabwe Livelihoods Assessment Committee Report of 2023,  2,7 million people were expected to be hit by food insecurity from April 2023 until the end of March 2024.

As the summer cropping season wraps up, what is left in the smallholder farmers’ fields are remnants of withered maize crops that failed to go beyond the early growth phase.
